Sterlingworth Inn and Sanitarium

Located along Chautauqua Lake, New York, the Cowing House opened in 1870 and was the first large resort on the lake. It was first marketed for the treatment of throat, lung, and nervous system diseases along with rehabilitation for narcotic abuse. It also was a large destination for fishing, hunting, and ice harvesting.

It was renamed the Lakeview House in 1874, and became the Sterlingworth Inn in 1889. The Sterlingworth Inn marketed itself towards the younger demographic promising dances, sanitation, billiards, baths, concerts, and fresh spring water.

Eventually the Sterlingworth Inn filed for bankruptcy and it was renamed the Waldermere, and became part of the neighboring Kent House, another local resort.  It was destroyed by a fire in 1903, and then in 1905 the Lakewood Country Club was built by the local summer residents. The Village of Lakewood bought the land in 1929 and demolished the property, making it Lakewood Village Park.  The park is now called Richard O. Hartley Park and can be visited today.
